While distributing What The Bleep Do We Know?! I was honored to be able to travel the world to speak about my experience making “Bleep.” The most common question people asked me at the end of my talks was, “ How did a broke, out of work, spiritually unconscious, material Valley Girl who was into sex, tequila and expensive shoes end up being a writer, director and producer of What the Bleep Do We Know!?”

Sometimes it takes the most unlikely of people in the most unusual circumstances to create something that touches the world like “Bleep” did. The story I told was so funny and resonated with so many people I decided to write a film about it, a comedy called Killing Buddha.

FILM SYNOPSIS

When life is in chaos we are forced to change, a lesson successful film producer Sara Wells reluctantly learns when her seemingly perfect life comes crashing down. Desperate for work, she takes on a documentary project about spirituality and the new thought movement. Will “Killing Buddha” mark her triumphant return to the riches she thinks her life once contained? Or will she and her mismatched crew of seekers, believers and cynics find that ultimately it’s not what you have and what you believe in, but who you ultimately become that counts?

Think “Bridget Jones gets hired to shoot a documentary about finding the meaning of life.”

Funny and light-hearted, Killing Buddha is a mainstream comedy that will include interviews with some of the greatest spiritual teachers, such as Deepak Chopra, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev and many others interacting with the actors as they shoot the “film within the film.”

Why do I want to make the film?

Killing Buddha is a reminder that everything we seek can be found within ourselves. Hence the title which prompts us to let go of all our attachments to the people, things and events in our lives that we put on pedestals thinking they can bring us happiness instead of finding happiness within. Really, it’s not the car, the boyfriend, the seminar, or even the guru — it’s you that makes the difference!

Simple, right? Yeah, so simple I and everybody else I know seem to keep forgetting it! So often in our search for meaningful answers we get lost in an overwhelming sea of choices, teachers, and so many messages, we forget our-selves. We give our power away to the latest fad, the newest idea (or even the oldest idea) we’ve just heard. Sometimes these beliefs and people take over and we lose track of our inner guidance.

Which is why I think it’s so important to get a funny reminder out there for all the people who’ve been on the spiritual path forever, as well as all the newbies asking the questions (maybe for the first time), “What does my life mean? Why am I here? And how can I be happy?”

Why help me fund this film?

Why should I make another film about “spirituality”? I mean, doesn’t everybody know this already? Well, firstly, this isn’t just another talking heads documentary about quantum physics (been there- done that!) It’s a back-to-the-basics narrative comedy that happens to have a spiritual message and includes some great minds helping our characters find it.

So, even if you know that happiness lies within, it’ll be funny to see all the ways we can forget! I’m sure many of you will relate to some of the incredible experiences our characters find themselves in. And consider this – there are literally millions of people in the world who could really use this message (specially in these times) who probably aren’t willing to watch films about quantum physics!

Or hey, you can just laugh at me via the characters in the movie! If there’s anything I learned making “BLEEP” it’s that films where people espouse great one-line quotes about the meaning of life are great and have their place. But sometimes, more than anything else, we all just need a good laugh. And when you’re laughing you’re more likely to learn something new. So, whatever reasons you need to join me in making this film – lets just do it!

Other Ways You Can Help

I am so grateful to all of you who supported “What the BLEEP.” It was because of your support that our little movie made such a global impact. And in those days we didn’t have social networking!

So, even if you can’t help fund this film, you can help spread the word! Please share this campaign on your social network, with your friends and anyone you think might want to be a part of bringing this simple, but important message to as many people as possible.

It all starts with you.

Thank you

First and foremost I am a single mom with two wonderful kids, Elora and Max. They are the light of my life and my world revolves around them! We love to garden, paint, create and cause as much of a rumpus as we can together.

I’m a filmmaker. You may have seen my film What The Bleep Do We Know?! I was a co-creator of the film, credited with co-writing, co-directing and producing. I was also a big part of the film’s distribution. Which leads to my next exciting venture: Intention Media Inc. Having had great success distributing “BLEEP,” I started Intention Media as a way to get meaningful films out to the world.

In addition to “BLEEP,” I also produced a very powerful documentary, Pregnant In America, which examines the bleak state of natural childbirth in the U.S.—a subject close to my heart since things are so bad in the States I elected to go to Canada to give birth to my son.

I am also an author. My new book, Metanoia – A Transformational Change of Heart, is a short book of essays written as I move through the painful process of divorce, re-examining my beliefs and venturing into a renewal of self.

I also co-authored the book What The Bleep Do We Know – Discovering the Endless Possibilities for Altering Your Everyday Reality. A companion book to the film.

I am about to begin production on my newest film Killing Buddha a lighthearted look at what people do to find themselves. It’s a semi auto biographical tale of her adventures in making “BLEEP” and what happens when the least likely person on the planet ends up making one of the most successful spiritual movies of all time.

I currently blog for Intent blog owned by Mallika Chopra, and host a radio show: Life Unscripted with Betsy Chasse every Thursday on Contact Talk Radio.

But what I really am is a person—a woman, a mom, a human being trying to make sense of life. Exploring all the
possibilities, evolving, changing, listening and being in this amazing reality we have all created together.

CATE MONTANA

Author of The Venus Code: My Journey to Find the Feminine in a Masculine World and co-author of GhettoPhysics: Redefining the Game with the co-creator of What the Bleep Do We Know!? Will Arntz, Cate Montana’s work focuses on self-realization, the physics of consciousness and implementing feminine life values and sustainable lifestyles.

Former publisher of the online magazines The Global Intelligencer and the wildly popular Bleeping Herald, Cate has published hundreds of articles in the mainstream press. She also worked as NW Bureau Chief for the national Native American newspaper, Indian Country Today. Prior to her writing and publishing career, she freelanced as a videotape editor for U.S. as well as European and Canadian television networks.

As a screenwriter she is author of The Return, a spiritual thriller about a government-staged second coming of Christ, and author of the film adaptation of A Gathering of Selves, the spiritual adventures of Alvin Schwartz, real-life creator of Superman and Batman for Detective Comics.

Currently she is co-authoring the book The Heart of the Matter with Hay House author Dr. Darren Weissman and developing seminars about feminine empowerment. She lives in the Pacific Northwest.

Why do I need your money!?

Movie financing is more confusing and complicated than the Nag Hammadi Library and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Especially these days, it’s hard to get the first people to put their money into a film. After the success with What The Bleep Do We Know?! a lot of people think I should just go the Hollywood route and raise millions of dollars for this project. But I don’t want to do that. I want to make a heartfelt, honest film like “BLEEP” without all the trappings of the Hollywood system.

My goal is to raise $100,000.00 (Or more!) to make the film. By making a donation of at least $25.00 you are essentially pre-ordering your dvd. If you donate more you get more cool perks!

Funny and light-hearted, Killing Buddha is designed to be a film you can take anyone to see, whether they’ve been on the spiritual journey for a long time, or are just beginning their search for life’s meaning. I believe it’s a film you will love and relate to and want to share with other people who need to hear this simple message: that we are loved and that the way forward is to find love for ourselves first.

Your funds will go to pay for the crew, actors, music, and camera equipment—all the stuff needed to make a film! Like “BLEEP” I hope to use some named actresses which will help bring the film to a more main stream audience.

I have some great perks for being part of this campaign. At the very least you’ll get a cool t-shirt or a digital copy or DVD of the film when it’s complete, or you’ll get your name in the film. If it’s a large donation you might even play a bit part in the movie! If you want to participate BIG TIME, you might become an associate producer and come to the Los Angeles premier!

It was because of your support that “BLEEP” made it out of the indie movie fringes and into the mainstream. This mainstream spiritual comedy with its laughs and life lessons can go even farther with your help.

So please, join me in creating an amazing film we can all enjoy together.

Blog Talk Radio Interview with Betsy on her new film by Meta Visionaries Radio

Article published on OM Times Magazine:

Laughter is the best medicine in hard times and Killing Buddha is first and foremost a comedy. And the title is politically correct! (It’s inspired from a quote from one of Buddhism’s most famous philosopher monks, Linji, the 9th century founder of Chán Buddhism.)

But the film also has a serious message and we have already attached three world superheroes of the New Age: Deepak Chopra, Barbara Marx Hubbard and Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev. [More]

(September 10, 2012 – con’t)

The script is finished and Valerie has sent it off to my first choice for the role of Sara. I can’t tell you who I am talking to – but know it’s someone famous! Right now the script is in the hands of her “peeps” let’s hope we get past the gate keepers! That’s one of the hardest parts about making a film. Getting the script to the right actors.

Patience is key and not giving up. One or two may say no- but I know the right “Sara” will say yes! Of course, all of your focus helps! I know you will!

See footage no one else will see! I promise to make it fun!

Thank you for being a part of making this dream a reality. I am so grateful you were inspired to contribute!

The 2nd week of our campaign has been great! I’ve been on several radio shows (Thank you Sheena Metal and Shay Parker!) and had some help in promotion from OmTimes!

I’ve written a few blogs since the launch I’d love to share with you -

They both talk about the film and offer some insights into why I’m making it.

http://intentblog.com/out-on-the-ledge-following-my-dream/

http://intentblog.com/oops-i-did-it-again/

It’s been interesting reading all the comments about the title and the image I chose for the poster. Yes I know it’s controversial! I believe at this point we need to be shocked into starting a conversation and we certainly have. That’s what I love about what I do. I am grateful to be able to explore interesting ideas and concepts and then share them with people and start a conversation.

Many have asked about the koan/quote that gave me inspiration for the title.

Here is a great explanation I found on dailybuddhism.com

If You Meet The Buddha On The Road, Kill Him
BY BRIAN SCHELL, ON DECEMBER 1ST, 2008 -

from Daily Buddhism

Question:

I have heard the phrase

“If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him!”

Can you explain this?

Answer:

It actually comes from an old koan attributed to Zen Master Linji,
(the founder of the Rinzai sect). It’s a simple one:

If you meet the Buddha, kill him. Linji

I’m sure you already realize that it’s not being literal.
The road, the killing, and even the Buddha are symbolic.

The road is generally taken to mean the path to Enlightenment; that might be through meditation, study, prayer, or just some aspect of your way of life. Your life is your road. That’s fairly straightforward as far as metaphors go.

But how do you meet the Buddha on this road? Imagine meeting some symbolic Buddha. Would he be a great teacher that you might actually meet and follow in the real world? Could that Buddha be you yourself, having reached Enlightenment? Or maybe you have some idealized image of perfection that equates to your concept of the Buddha or Enlightenment.

Whatever your conception is of the Buddha, it’s WRONG! Now kill that image and keep practicing. This all has to do with the idea that reality is an impermanent illusion. If you believe that you have a correct image of what it means to be Enlightened, then you need to throw out (kill) that image and keep meditating.

Most people have heard the first chapter of the Tao. The Tao that can be named is not the eternal Tao.
(So if you think you see the real Tao, kill it and move on).

So, The “Buddha’s” we are “killing” are the attachments to people and things outside of us that we have come to believe will bring us happiness or enlightenment. It’s time to within and find what we are looking for there.

When you joined our team you not only helped in financing the film with your hard earned dollars – you also used your most important tool – your voice. Many people have said it should be easy to get funding for my film- after all I made “BLEEP” and for sure it’s probably easier for me then some. But in these days it still takes convincing. This campaign is important because it shows investors that people want to see this film! It’s shows actors that this film is worth being in!

I am now at a crucial point in the campaign – it’s going well, but now we really need to light it up.

it takes a crowd and I need your help in getting one! My goal by Wednesday June 27th is $30,0000 raised! That means I need at least 1000 people to put in a minimum of $25.00. That’s not impossible! With your help sending out emails, posting in your networks we can do it!

Here is a copy of a great facebook post by one of our partners! Please feel free to share it-

I am honored to be a part of the KILLING BUDDHA team! Now that I’ve put in my funds not only am I getting cool stuff like a t-shirt, dvd, my name in the film and much more. I get to follow along as the film is being made via a special website just for those of us who have joined! Not only am I supporting the film with a small contribution, But most importantly I’m using my voice by saying I want this film made! Let’s support the making of Betsy Chasse’s film!

If you visit my facebook page you’ll find lots of images and quotes you can share. There is something for every one- so stop by and join my facebook page if you haven’t already!

You can find me on facebook by clicking here!

Thank you for believing in my film and it’s message. Thank you for joining the team!

I am grateful to you all.

Best,

Betsy Chasse
